Meta unveils paid verified subscription for Facebook, Instagram

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Meta, the social media giant formerly known as Facebook plans to introduce a subscription model for users in Europe that would allow them to access Instagram and Facebook without ads. The company is said to be planning to charge European users approximately $14 per month for the ad-free subscription on desktop, with an additional $6 for each extra account. The monthly subscription price would increase to approximately $16 on mobile devices to cover commissions charged by Apple’s and Google’s app stores on in-app payments.

Meta has informed privacy regulators in Ireland, digital completion regulators in Brussels, and EU privacy regulators about its plans to introduce the subscription model. However, it is not clear if the new plan will comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which prohibits companies from combining the personal data of users across their different services and imposes other restrictions.
The EU has been working to regulate big tech companies more strictly to protect European users online and encourage competition in industries dominated by US giants. Meta has been assigned “gatekeeper” status under the new Digital Markets Act, which aims to prevent companies from abusing their market power.

Meta has stated that it plans to roll out the subscription no-ads (SNA) plan for European users in the coming month, giving users the option to pay for their services without any ads or continue accessing Facebook and Instagram with personalized ads. The company has also said that it believes in free services supported by personalized ads but is open to exploring options to comply with evolving regulatory requirements.
