Tapped The Potential of Skill-Based Gaming

The future of skill-based gaming is set to be explosive, and as someone with over a decade of mobile advertising experience and the co-founder of gaming publisher AppCentral, I do not doubt that this emerging category will gain significant traction over the next few years.
Skill-Based Gaming (Part I): What is a Skill-Based Game? | Gulf States Gaming Law

Skill-based gaming is all about showcasing real talent and skills, whether they are physical or mental, without any element of chance or luck. Games like Solitaire Cash and Bubble Cash from Papaya Gaming are great examples of this. Bubble Cash, for instance, combines the classic bubble shooter game with contemporary matchups and tournaments.

  • Over the coming years, skill-based gaming will continue to grow, with more games being created to provide sophisticated and immersive experiences. From AAA games to hyper-casual, skill-based gaming will encompass the full gaming spectrum.
  • Currently, most skill-based games with a reward-based model are available only on iOS devices. With Google and Android app stores and web applications also adopting these games, I believe the market could quickly double or even triple.
  • The market that was once confined to the U.S. is now significantly growing in regions such as the U.K., Australia, Canada, and India. Skill-based games are yet to reach significant adoption worldwide, but I do not doubt that they will soon.
  • To ensure success in skill-based gaming, the ecosystem and the economy that frame the gameplay will be essential. The gaming industry is becoming more sophisticated on two fronts: creatively and mathematically. A personal economy means that the gameplay can adjust to your preferences, supported by AI that will transform how the experience adapts and evolves uniquely for the player.
As a young vertical, the skill-based gaming market will see a lot of innovation in the gameplay and technology around it. With the metaverse and AI expected to continue to disrupt the space in 2023, game experiences will get more epic and cinematic than ever. Game engines such as Unreal Engine 5.1 and Unity are steadily catching up with the visual delights that we’re only used to seeing in movies.
